Chinese Ambassador H.E. Yao Jing met Parliamentary Leader PPP-P and Convenor of Special Committee on the Project of China Pakistan Economic Corridor, Senator Sherry Rehman in her Chamber at Parliament House and exchanged views on areas of collaboration between the two countries.
During the meeting Senator Sherry Rehman discussed matters of mutual concern. Rehman stressed, “Addressing the apprehensions of the provinces that have arisen as a result of the capacity and coordination deficit of the current government is crucial”.
The Ambassador reassured Rehman on concerns on Pakistan’s indebtedness to China, saying, “The Peoples Republic is only charging 2-2.5 per cent on government to government loans with a repayment term that goes into a long tenure. Sovereign guarantees are also only required on government projects. There currently 21 ongoing projects worth $19 billion.”
Senator Sherry Rehman, in turn, assured Ambassador H.E. Yao Jing of her party’s complete support and said, “All members of the Special Committee on the Project of China Pakistan Economic Corridor look forward to CPEC as an opportunity that would benefit both countries immensely and we would do all that is needed to facilitate it”.
Ambassador H.E. Yao Jing thanked Senator Sherry Rehman for her support and said that he looked forward to enhancing Pak-China Friendship that commenced during the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto government.
