Ambassador Rehman hosts interfaith Iftar in Washington; urges mutual tolerance

ce and mutual understanding as she hosted an unprecedented gathering of leading interfaith voices. Ambassador Sherry Rehman also underscored Islam’s message of moderation and brotherhood and Islamabad’s commitment to Quaid-e-Azam’s ideals of coexistence and mutual respect at the Iftar dinner that she hosted on the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day.

This landmark event at the Pakistani embassy was attended by leading Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Muslim religious leaders, with all of them wishing love, peaceful coexistence and understanding as they prayed on the occasion, drawing on humanist teachings common to all faiths.

The religious leaders included Rev. William Aiken, Rev. Dr. Carol Flett, Nepalese ambassador to the United State Shankar Prasad Sharma, Rev. William Sachs, Dr. Rajwant Singh, Rabbi Bruce Lustig , Dr. Mohamed Elsanousi and Imam Majid.Besides, a huge gathering of Americans from think tanks, interfaith institutions, senior diplomats from the embassies of Italy and Sri Lanka, former US ambassadors including Ambassador Wendy Chamberlin, Ambassador Howard and Teresita Schaffer, Ambassador John McDonald, and Emre Celik, President of Rumi Forum, representatives of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, human rights organizations as well as religious and community leaders attended the event.
